After receiving some questions about transmission shifting behavior upon loading tunes from the KC Evolution Tuner for the 6.0 Powerstroke, we have put together the most comprehensive 5r110w relearn procedure to follow in order to keep your transmission happy. This relearn procedure is a combination of information pulled from ATSG, Ford IDS, and recommendations we have received from experienced tuners in the past all combined in one place.
Written below is the 5r relearn strategy. The reason this is a requirement, or at very least a recommendation, is due the 5r110 using an "Adaptive Shift Strategy" that caters towards the driving habits of the owner.
5r110 Transmission Relearn Procedure:
Any time the battery is disconnected for any reason, a new PCM has been installed, or the calibration has been reflashed (tuned), the adaptive strategy for the "Engagement Schedule" of the 5r110 must be updated.
This procedure will prevent the customer from experiencing firm or harsh engagement complaints.
5r110 Transmission Relearn Procedure is as follows:
Note: All of the following engagements must be performed, in order for engagement pressures to correctly adapt with the new calibration.
Start the vehicle.
Install diagnostic equipment and monitor Transmission Fluid Temp.
Warm the transmission fluid to 54°C (130°F) as indicated by the TFT.
Note: Allow the vehicle to reach 130°F in Park with the vehicle idling. Do NOT engage any gears.
Perform 5 engagements from Park to Reverse. Each engagement must be five seconds apart.
Perform 5 engagements from Drive to Reverse. Each engagement must be five seconds apart.
Perform 5 engagements from Reverse to Drive. Each engagement must be five seconds apart.
Perform 5 engagements from Neutral to Drive. Each engagement must be five seconds apart.
Then go for a drive.
Take it easy and stay under 1/4 throttle for about 10 minutes.
Make sure it is stop and go driving so the trans can shift through the gears multiple times.
After about 10 minutes then do a couple of 1/2 throttle runs.
After about 10 minutes then do a couple of 1/2 throttle runs.
Make sure it is stop and go driving so the trans can shift through the gears multiple times.
Then do a couple 3/4 throttle runs.
Make sure it is stop and go driving so the trans can shift through the gears multiple times.
Then finally do a couple of WOT runs.
Make sure it is stop and go driving so the trans can shift through the gears multiple times.
Note: If the vehicle acts like it "neutrals out" or cannot find the next gear during the driving steps laid out above, go back to the previous step and continue the gradually increasing throttle position drive cycle.
Your 5r110 transmission relearn is now complete. If your transmission continues to have issues after completing the relearn procedure, more diagnostics are needed.
