Sharing more good info on turbo/injector info from last week. VGT vs Non-VGT data coming in hot!!!!
We have been doing a ton of dyno testing recently and just want to share the data and also clear up some "mis-information"
It would have taken too long to swap all parts back and forth on the same truck while for the short time he was here so we set up 2 similar trucks that should make around the same HP.
Truck A:
2006 rclb 4x4
SoCal t4 kit with the new Borg SXR s364/68/.91
330/150s turned down to 1.6-1.7ms (should be about 225cc)
Truck B:
2006 rclb 4x4
KC s3 68mm vgt
205/100 max effort tune (about 2.2-2.4s)
We drove and dyno'd the trucks back to back. Data was about what I would expect, but it might surprise some.
On the street the s3 was much easier to drive and get into boost. It was very obvious how much faster it spooled but it was harder to tell top end power difference . The way the s364 lagged and then hit so hard late in the rpms made it hard to tell which had more top end power. So we put them onto the dyno to get more data.
If you look at the dyno you can see the truck with the 205s and s3 spooled faster, made more peak tq, more peak hp, and more power at redline. AND DID IT WITH LESS EBP AT REDLINE. Yes thats right, lower EBP where it matters most.
For a little extra data we also threw and s369/73/1.0 on truck A to see how much extra fuel was left over with 330s at 1.7ms because it was pretty dirty with the s364. It gained 78hp... and still ran higher EBP at redline than the s3 vgt.
So its a fallacy that "vgt turbos always run higher ebp". I see this catch phase repeated all the time but no one posts any data. It would be a much more truthful statement to say vgt turbos "can" run higher ebp and have to ability to drive the turbo harder down low in the rpms to build boost sooner. So at lower rpms, lower boost, lower hp... vgt turbos run higher ebp... but that is not where you hurt things and where it really matters. If excess EBP is going to hurt something it going to be at higher rpms near max HP and peak EBP.
Non-vgt turbos dont "always" run 1:1 ratios. It would be more accurate to say that a non-vgt "can" run 1:1 ratios up until the turbine housing chokes out and then EBP climbs very quickly. Factory EBP sensor maxes out at 40psi and people don't realize it keeps climbing after that... hence the mis information.
Check out the pic attached to better see the graphs and numbers. I am going to repeat this test soon. We will do a little back and for injectors testing and turbo swapping and get more exact back to back data. Like do 205/100s spool turbos faster than 330/150s?
I didn't put boost on there because the factory map sensors were maxed out and don't have the data. I will make sure to get it next time.
